4th FESTIVAL ‘EARTH, WATER, FIRE’, THRAPSANO HERACLEIOU

With great pleasure, the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage participated again this year with speeches by its representatives and an informative pavilion at the 4th Festival ‘Earth, Water, Fire’ organized in Thrapsano of Heraklion from July 4 to 7 with the auspices and financial support of the Ministry of Culture.

In Thrapsano, a place with a rich and centuries-old pottery tradition, inscribed in the National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece, every July for four whole days the heart of ceramic art beats. Thrapsani potters converse with ceramists from other parts of Greece, present their work to visitors of all ages and teach the art of clay to young and old. The events are accompanied by speeches by archaeologists and ceramic researchers, visits to pottery workshops, open discussions, etc. In fact, this year the visitors had the opportunity to get to know the work of the students of the University Structure Education in Ceramic Art, which was founded in Thrapsano by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Center for Lifelong Learning of the University of Western Macedonia.

The participation of visitors this year exceeded all expectations, justifying the effort and efforts made not only by the Organizing Committee but also by all the residents of Thrapsanos who participated voluntarily and in every way in the preparation and implementation of the Festival. Warm congratulations to the Cultural Association of Thrapsan Cultural Association of Thrapsanos For the initiative and the tireless effort, the Younger study center and the British School of Athens British School at Athens for the scientific supervision and support throughout the festival, Region of Crete / Region of Crete, the Educational Development Navigator and the Municipality of Minoa Pediada – Municipality of Minoa Pediadas for their substantial contribution to the organization.

Actions, such as the ‘Soil, Water, Fire’ Festival, prove the special importance of cooperation between civil society, university-research institutions and local government and the role it can play in the preservation and promotion of living heritage.
